We, the Church, the family of God in Southern Africa, commit to work together with others for the good of all, by responding to the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth, through Worship, Proclamation of the Word of God, Formation, Advocacy, Human Development and Care of Creation.
What this means for us:
“The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration.” Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium
Your parish is more than a building or a boundary on a map; it’s a home, a family, a community of communities. It’s where the Good News is received and shared, where people give their time and talents without ever feeling like outsiders, and where anyone weary from life’s journey can find rest and healing.
Every parish is guided by its priest and supported by a Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) and Parish Finance Committee (PFC), made up of elected and co-opted members who help carry out the parish’s mission with the wider Diocese.
Our Pastoral Plan organizes the Church’s mission into eight focal areas, Evangelization at the center, four areas of Community life branching from it, and three areas of Service underpinning it all.
1. Evangelisation (the center of everything)
Sharing a personal, living relationship with Jesus, the foundation every other area flows from. Do we pray together? How can we help others come to know and love Jesus?
2. Laity Formation and Empowerment
Equipping the lay faithful, who live and work in the world every day, to bring the Gospel into their homes, workplaces, and communities as a “leaven” for good.
3. Life and Ministry of Priests and Deacons
Supporting those called to ordained ministry through prayer, formation, and the whole community’s encouragement of vocations.
4. Marriage and Family
Recognising the family as the heart of pastoral care, and walking with couples and households through every season, courtship, marriage, parenting, and the hard seasons of loss, divorce, or special need.
5. Youth
With young people making up the majority of the Church’s membership across Africa, this focal area meets young people where they are, addressing real questions about school, work, identity, and belonging, through youth-to-youth ministry.
6. Justice, Peace and Non-Violence
Standing for the dignity of every person, confronting gender-based violence, corruption, racism, and human trafficking, and working for equal opportunity and peace in our communities.
7. Healing and Reconciliation
Bringing people back into right relationship with God and each other, in families, parishes, and across the divides of culture and history, including the wounds of our national past.
8. Care of Creation and the Environment
Living out our God-given responsibility for the earth: caring for soil, water, air, and all living things as a heritage for generations still to come.
